Sink or Float.. What we know about BUOYANCY!

Students were introduced to the concept of buoyancy, when we started studying different types of transportation a few weeks ago. We looked at many different types of vehicles, aircrafts, sea vessels, etc. Students did a great job identifying all of the different forms of transportation and where we would see them in our daily lives.

Once we learned about all of the different forms of transportation, we started wondering how ships and boats are able to stay on top of the water, while smaller things sink to the bottom. We read an informational book related to buoyancy and watched an exciting brain pop jr. video... then we got to the fun part! Students used the information from our book and video to decide which items they thought would sink and which items would float..then we put our items to the test. While we had many correct guesses, there were also many surprises. Take a look below to check out some of our fun. Once we were completed our experiment, we made a cute graphic organizer to show which items sunk and which items stayed afloat. While everyone participated, I didn't do the best job of capturing pictures. :(

Happy Birthday, Johnny Appleseed!

Students had a fabulous time celebrating the birthday of John Chapman, also known as, Johnny Appleseed. Students learned about this beloved historical figure, read about apple trees, taste tested and graphed their favorite types of apples, and made some unexpectedly salty applesauce!

Making our "Facts About Johnny Appleseed" books!

Graphing our favorite types of apples!

 Green had the most votes!

Taste testing some yummy apples!

Mixing our ingredients!

Where things took a turn for the worst... I will be labeling my salt and sugar pourers when I get home. We may have added a 1/2 cup of salt, instead of sugar! :0

Getting ready to have a huge let down! We were all so excited to taste our yummy treat... especially after smelling it all day! The students all complained and said it tasted nasty. I wasn't convinced until I took a nice salty mouthful for myself. We were all pretty disappointed, but we all got a good laugh afterwards.
